Lufthansa announces June flights to Costa Rica

Lufthansa will resume flights to Costa Rica in June, the airline said in a press release.

Starting in mid-June, the German carrier plans to resume several international routes, including its long-haul offering between Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) and Frankfurt.

Lufthansa’s website shows twice-weekly flights (Wednesdays and Saturdays) beginning June 17. The 12-hour flight will be operated by an Airbus A340-300.

“The Lufthansa Group airlines are thus responding to the growing interest of customers in air travel as travel restrictions and entry rules in various countries have gradually ben relaxed,” the airline said in a statement. “This includes the German government’s planned lifting of travel advisories and restrictions for more than 31 European countries.”

Current Costa Rican restrictions ban the entry of tourists until June 16. This may be extended further; the Health Ministry said it is currently evaluating what health measures the country will enforce in June.

“Imported cases are one of the biggest risks we face as a country,” Román Macaya, president of the Costa Rican Social Security System, said last week.

It’s unclear whether Lufthansa will cancel its flights if Costa Rica extends its entry restrictions.

“When planning their trip, customers should observe the current entry and quarantine regulations of the respective destinations,” Lufthansa said in a statement.

Under current protocol, citizens and residents who enter Costa Rica are issued a 14-day home isolation order and are tested for the coronavirus.

Non-citizen residents who depart Costa Rica through June 15 are obligated to sign a form acknowledging they cannot return to the country until further notice.

Available flights to Costa Rica

Juan Santamaría International Airport lists the following tentative schedule for airlines to resume service to SJO:

  • Air Canada at an unspecified date in July.
  • Alaska Airlines on June 16 to Los Angeles.
  • American Airlines on July 7 to Miami and Dallas.
  • British Airways on June 27 to London.
  • Condor on June 20 to Frankfurt.
  • Delta Air Lines on June 19 to Atlanta and Los Angeles.
  • Edelweiss on June 23 to Zurich.
  • Iberia on June 15 to Madrid.
  • Latam on June 16 to Lima.
  • Southwest Airlines on August 30 to Fort Lauderdale and Houston.
  • Spirit Airlines on July 5 to Fort Lauderdale and Orlando.
  • United Airlines currently offers repatriation flights to Houston.
  • Wingo on June 16 to Bogotá.

Dates are subject to change.

All other airlines have either indefinitely suspended service to Costa Rica or have yet to inform the airport when they will resume flights.

The Health Ministry has said that all arriving international flights during the coronavirus crisis should utilize Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) rather than Liberia International Airport (LIR).
