Tremor in Central Valley, ongoing cold front greet Costa Rica this Monday

A small tremor rattled parts of Costa Rica on Monday morning.

A magnitude 3.47 quake awoke many in the Central Valley minutes before 5 a.m., according to the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI), based at Universidad Nacional (UNA) in Heredia.

There were no reports of damage.

According to the National Emergency Commission (CNE), Costa Rica averages 350 earthquakes each month, or about 12 each day. The majority go unnoticed by the general public.

The National Emergency Commission issued on Sunday a green alert for the Central Valley and the North Pacific regions of Costa Rica.

“The CNE has declared a green alert for the Central Valley due to strong winds due to the Cold Front 14 and in the North Pacific due to strong waves, choppy sea and intense winds,” the organization reported.

CNE issued a reminder to be vigilant for fallen trees, signs and power lines, and said the weather conditions could continue until Tuesday.

The National Meteorological Institute predicted “the influence of this [cold front] will gradually decrease over the course of this Monday; however, windy conditions will remain for most of the week.”
