Costa Rica’s northwest shakes with magnitude 5.5 quake on Sunday

Maybe earthquakes are the secret to a long life.

A magnitude 5.5 earthquake shook Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula at 12:31 p.m. Sunday, according to data from the National Seismological Network (RSN).

The tremor had an epicenter near Tamarindo, Guanacaste, which is located on the Nicoya Peninsula — one of the world’s so-called “Blue Zones” due to its residents’ high life expectancies.

The National Emergency Commission said Sunday there were no reports of significant damage.

“Remember to remain calm during aftershocks or new seismic events,” CNE said. “In case of other earthquakes, go to safe areas and help people and neighbors who require assistance.”

CNE says Costa Rica averages 350 earthquakes each month, or about 12 each day.
