Costa Rica’s imposing Rio Grande railway bridge

In honor of Costa Rica taking steps to rebuild its railroad to the Pacific, we’re recognizing one of the country’s most impressive architectural achievements.

The Rio Grande railway bridge, which was completed at the turn of the 20th century, is still a sight to behold. Just imagine traversing it via train!

Today, the railroad is largely unused, and the Rio Grande railway bridge is bordered by an vehicle bridge that’s part of Route 27.

The undated featured photo appeared in The Pan American Union’s 1924 book providing general descriptive information on Costa Rica.

“The Pacific Railway of Costa Rica traverses one of the richest tropical and subtropical portions of the Republic, noted for the luxuriance of its vegetation and the beam of its scenery,” the caption reads.
