Walmart’s presence in Costa Rica is seemingly inescapable.
In addition to the 12 Walmart Supercenters it operates in Costa Rica, the multinational retail corporation also owns 210 Pali and Maxi Pali stores, and 38 Mas X Menos supermarkets.
Now, Walmart is entering Costa Rica’s gourmet coffee industry through its “Great Value” brand.
Walmart and Mas X Menos locations in Costa Rica now sell Great Value coffee grown in Tres Ríos, Naranjo and Tarrazú, according to a press release from Walmart de Mexico y Centroamerica.
The company says it is the first Great Value product made in Costa Rica and suggested the coffee may be sold in other markets in the near future.
“We have taken care from the selection of the grain to the design of the packaging, which is inspired by each of the coffee regions where it is produced, where several of them have been awarded with an international cup of excellence,” the company said in a statement.
“Differentiating elements such as the flora and fauna representative of these places are used in its packaging, as well as emblematic buildings and musical instruments.”
Walmart says its entry into the gourmet coffee market will benefit “more than 25 producers” in Costa Rica.
Walmart entered Central America in 2005. Its Walmart de Mexico y Centroamerica headquarters are in San José.
