Thousands march in pro-life demonstration through San José

Thousands of people participated Saturday morning in a march “por la vida” in downtown San José.

Wearing light blue as they demonstrated in the capital city, the marchers carried anti-abortion signs and implored that President Carlos Alvarado not sign a change to the Criminal Code that would officially decriminalize abortions if the mother’s health is at risk.

As CRHoy explained earlier this month:

Abortion in Costa Rica is allowed in those cases in which the mother’s health is in danger. However, there is a need for a technical standard that regulates the parameters that doctors must follow in order to respect that right of affected women. The government is in charge of writing this norm, specifically of the Ministry of Health.

But for now President Alvarado has not been clear on when he will sign the norm. This despite the fact that it was a campaign promise, that he said he would do it this year and has received constant pressure from within his same cabinet and from the National Women’s Institute (INAMU) for the signing of the document.
