Ticos earn second medal at 2019 Pan American Games

Costa Rica’s men’s doubles racquetball team earned the country’s second medal of the 2019 Pan American Games after defeating Guatemala in the quarterfinals.

Felipe Camacho and Andrés Acuña secured a podium spot by beating their Central American rivals, 15-8 and 15-4. The duo settled for bronze after falling to Bolivia on Tuesday evening.

The achievement marks Costa Rica’s second medal of the 2019 Games after Nishy Lee Lindo earned bronze in the taekwondo women’s under-57 kg class.

Costa Rica has participated in every iteration of the Pan American Games, which were first held in 1951. Tico athletes have now earned a total of 22 medals: five gold, six silver and 11 bronze.

The country’s most successful year was 1987, when Costa Rica took home 11 medals, including three gold.

Historically, the United States has dominated the Pan American Games. As of Wednesday afternoon, the North Americans have 159 medals, comprising 63 gold, 51 silver and 45 bronze.
