Huge New Club Shakes Up City’s Nightlife Scene

In a warehouse behind the Cervecería Costa Rica in San Joaquín de Flores, north of San José, techno music is thumping. Club 212 has just opened, and it is massive: 2,500 people can dance to a top-notch sound and lighting system installed on two floors decorated with plush lounge chairs and soft-lit bars.

Billing itself as the “top club in Central America,” Club 212 opened its doors last Friday with much fanfare, highlighted by the savory sounds of Flamenco Express and Cuban salsa band Chocolate, plus mixes by DJ Andrés Solano.

Though drink quality may leave a little to be desired, the club’s ambience, size and sound tech have raised the bar for nightlife in the capital.

“There isn’t another place in San José that can offer this kind of sound, lighting or space,” said Roberto “Ferroque” Ruiz, event planner for Club 212. “Both national and international talent will be impressed with the quality of the equipment.”

Ruiz added that the club is named after the area code for New York City, home to Club 212’s investors.

The club has parking space for 300 cars and is open Fridays and Saturdays from 8 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. During the week, managers said, the space may be rented out for private events such as graduations and business functions.

The club’s first big-name performer will be Uruguayan singer and four-time Latin Grammy nominee Jorge Drexler, who is scheduled to perform Nov. 28. The concert was originally set to be held at the Kingdomtakers Auditorium in La Uruca, but was moved to Club 212 after its opening.

For information about the club, call 2265-1079 or visit its Facebook page.
