Teatro Jacó to open with ‘Jamaica Farewell’

A new theater company will stage its first production at the end of the month in the Central Pacific beach town of Jacó.

Teatro Jacó, led by artistic director Darren Lee Cole of New York City’s SoHo Playhouse, will open its first season with “Jamaica Farewell,” a one-woman show starring Kingston, Jamaica, native Debra Ehrhardt. The award-winning play, which tells the story of Ehrhardt’s journey from Jamaica to the United States in the 1970s, has been touring the United States, Canada, the Caribbean and the United Kingdom since a successful off-Broadway run in spring 2008.

Ehrhardt is currently adapting the play for the big screen; stage and screen rights have been optioned by Hollywood actress and producer Rita Wilson, wife of Tom Hanks.

“Jamaica Farewell” will be presented Jan. 27 through Feb. 6, with performances Thursday through Sunday at 7:30 p.m., in a rooftop theater at Canciones del Mar hotel on the beach in Jacó. Tickets cost $20 for the performance only, or $45 including dinner. For reservations, call 2643-3272 or e-mail info@teatrojaco.com. For information on the new Teatro Jacó, visit www.teatrojaco.com.
