Costa Rica-Nicaragua talks set

A meeting between Costa Rica and Nicaragua over mutual tactics to fight drug trafficking is set for April 12. Analysts hope the meeting could lead to a breakthrough in the stalemate over a border dispute between the two countries at Isla Calero, along the Caribbean coast. The two sides are set to discuss a common agenda against crime and drug trafficking near the border.

This would be the first official meeting between representatives of the two nations since the International Court of Justice issued a provisional ruling on March 8 (TT, March 8). The court urged both countries to withdraw military and police forces from the disputed area.

“The ruling from the world court recommended both nations to reach an agreement on how to deal with criminal activity in the area while is still being disputed. That’s why we are requesting a get-together with Nicaraguan delegates,” said Costa Rican Foreign Affairs Vice Minister Carlos Roverssi.

Roverssi also announced the arrival of members from the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands this coming Sunday. Ramsar representatives will be in the country for a week to audit potential wetland destruction by Nicaraguan military forces.
