Earthquakes felt across Costa Rica on Sunday

A 6.4-magnitude earthquake shook Costa Rica at 1:24 pm Sunday afternoon.

The earthquake had an epicenter approximately 7.5 km south of the town of Corredor, Puntarenas. It had a depth of 9 km, according to the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI), based at Universidad Nacional (UNA) in Heredia, north of San José.

Shaking was felt throughout the Puntarenas province and in the Greater Metropolitan Area. Residents in San José, Cartago, San Isidro de El General and in towns across Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast reported on social media that they had felt the initial earthquake.

The National Emergency Commission said Sunday afternoon that there was no significant damage done by the earthquake or its aftershocks. Brief power outages were quickly rectified by the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE), according to CNE.

“We live in a highly seismic country,” CNE said. “The CNE reminds you to keep calm before an event of this nature and to stay informed through official means.”

Five people were injured in Panama, where the country’s National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc) reported minor damage. Schools in the Baru district were closed Monday.

OVSICORI reported several aftershocks, including a pair of magnitudes 4.1 and 3.0, respectively, with epicenters near the initial quake.

Sunday evening, OVSICORI reported earthquakes further north in Puntarenas province, including a 5.2-magnitude quake near Parrita at 7:01 p.m.
