Docs fight dengue outbreak in Limón

An outbreak of the mosquito-borne dengue illness has Costa Rica’s Caribbean province of Limón on alert.

The country’s Social Security System (Caja) has intensified its prevention campaign. More than 2,000 confirmed cases have been reported so far, the worst in years, and double last year’s total. Hospitals have been packed to capacity with patients, according to EFE news agency. A medical manager for the Caja said mosquitoes seem to be developing a resistance to chemicals used in fumigations. However, so far no deaths have been reported.

Overall, the dengue cases in the country have fallen.
