Green alert issued as cold front passes through Costa Rica

The National Emergency Commission (CNE) declared a green alert throughout Costa Rica due to an incoming cold front. The effects are expected to last throughout the weekend.

The National Meteorological Institute says winds in excess of 100 kph are expected in the Guanacaste mountain range, La Cruz, Tilarán, Arenal and the Central Volcanic Range. The strong winds are expected to produce rough seas that can reach up to 4.5 meters in the northern Pacific and Caribbean coasts.

The CNE is asking people in the green alert regions to be careful when operating small boats in the affected regions. They also warned beachgoers that the rough seas could create strong rip currents.

Strong winds can also damage roofs, posts, electrical wires, trees and road signs. Temperatures will also drop in the central valley and drivers should be aware of strong rain and fog on major highways throughout the country.
