Foundation aims to roll mobile museum into schools

With help from the Tayutic Foundation and donations from the public, schoolchildren may soon be able to visit a mobile museum to learn more about Costa Rica’s pre-Columbian people and the lives they led in and around the Guayabo National Monument, just north of Turrialba in the Cartago province.

The foundation’s mission is to “support the reclamation, investigation, preservation and sharing of Costa Rica’s pre-Hispanic, colonial and indigenous legacy.” The group focuses on the Turrialba Valley and the Guayabo National Monument, Costa Rica’s largest archaeological site.

The Tayutic Foundation has set a goal of $10,000 to convert a donated school bus into a museum with interactive and audiovisual exhibits. The mobile museum will help supplement curricula in area schools, many of which lack resources for field trips and classroom instruction about the Guayabo National Monument and indigenous Costa Rican cultures.

Donations as little as $5 are being accepted via credit card, debit card or PayPal through the international funding platform IndieGoGo. Donors will be awarded gifts ranging from postcards to travel vouchers to visit the monument. To learn more or make donations, go to www.indiegogo.com and search for “Mobile Museum of Guayabo in a bus for Costa Rica.”
