Train to Cartago to begin operating next week

After several delays, the Costa Rican Railroad Institute (INCOFER) announced that train service between San José and the province of Cartago is set to begin on May 16 or 17.

The new train route was scheduled to start last December but a first delay occurred during the arrival of the trains, which were purchased from Spain.

INCOFER again postponed the start until January because there were delays in the construction of the railroad line.

A third delay occurred because INCOFER said that the fare set by the Public Services Regulatory Authority (ARESEP) was insufficient to cover operating costs.

The new announcement for next week mantains the fare as established by ARESEP at ₡550 ($1.10) each way, although INCOFER officials still say it should be at least ₡565 ($1.13).

INCOFER filed an appeal and is awaiting a resolution by ARESEP.
