Beating the rainy season in La Fortuna

As the “green season” descends on Costa Rica, tourism thins. Most foreign visitors would prefer sun and blue skies to rain and mosquitoes, and tourist towns like La Fortuna, near Arenal Volcano in northern Costa Rica, get noticeably quiet.

But as Robert Isenberg and his girlfriend Kylan discovered, the off-season offers plenty of pleasures and pastimes – and only a fraction of the crowds.

With its slashed hotel rates, fertile rain forest, and absence of lines or tour buses, La Fortuna in June is a great weekend destination.

The only hitch: You have to wait out the rain.
