Massive photo project to showcase Costa Rica’s diversity, people

In November, the vivid work of Argentine photographer (and Tico Times collaborator) Lucas Iturriza, who traveled across Costa Rica to capture its diversity on film, will be exhibited in a large project to be installed in San José’s La Sabana Park, at the National Stadium. Ten photographers joined Iturriza for the project, which is titled, “Todos Somos Costa Rica,” meaning “We Are All Costa Rica.” The display will contain 80 images, enlarged to giant size.

“The point of the exhibition is to put a face on Costa Rica,” Iturriza said in a phone interview. “The image of Costa Rica is typically nature, such as the green frog or the forest.”

The photos showcase Costa Ricans of indigenous, African, and other heritages, often in traditional clothing.

Iturriza grew up in Buenos Aires, but has lived in Costa Rica for six years. He said this will be one of the largest exhibitions he has ever had, matching one in 1999 with a magazine in Buenos Aires.

When the exhibit ends, Iturriza said he will auction off the large photos to raise funds to build bridges for an isolated indigenous community, Alto Telire, Talamanca. The mountainous community sits in the south central part of the country, and according to Iturriza is only accessible via days-long hikes or by helicopter. Iturriza profiled the community for a series in The Tico Times; read those stories here and here.

More photos can be seen on this preview website or on the project’s Facebook page.
