Look to the skies Saturday night and see the moon like it hasn’t been in 18 years: “Super.”
A type of full moon known as a “supermoon” will appear over our heads Saturday after sunset. According to NASA, it will be the largest full moon in 18 years.
This phenomenon takes place when the moon is on a part of its elliptical orbit around the Earth called the “perigee.” When this happens, the moon is closest to our planet. As a result, the moon looks gigantic.
Nevertheless, NASA informs stargazers that the moon will still be 221,566 miles away.
The best time to view the supermoon is when it is near the horizon.
