Huge gallo pinto festival happening in Paseo Colón on Sunday

Costa Rica will celebrate its most popular recipe with its annual festival Sunday.

Approximately 100,000 dishes of gallo pinto will be served at the fourth annual Gallo Pinto National Festival at 9 a.m. on Sunday in Paseo Colón. The activity organized by the San José Municipality will promote a Costa Rican classic meal with a feast that will also include family activities, live music and comedy acts.

Gallo pinto, which literally means “spotted rooster,” is a traditional meal that mixes rice and beans that’s loved in Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

The head cook at this year’s event will be Carlos Castrillo, an executive chef at Hotel Plaza Ramada Herradura in San José. He’ll be accompanied by a team of 50 staff members and students from the National Learning Institute (INA) and private universities.

A full schedule of cultural and artistic activities is set for the event, including folk dancing, the Tico Jazz Band and comedian like Chico Loco and Mauricio Astorga.
