Legislators ask to break contract with highway company Autopistas del Sol

Three of the seven representatives on the Concessions Committee called for Costa Rica to break the contract with Autopistas del Sol, the business that built the new and troubled Caldera Highway that connects San José to the Pacific Coast.

In a 122-page document, legislators noted how problems with asphalt quality and the way the highway was built have led to repeated problems since the road opened in late January 2010. The highway has endured multiple landslides.

The legislators, Víctor Emilio Granados (Accessibility without Exclusion Party), Wálter Céspedes (Social Christian Unity Party) and Manrique Oviedo (Citizen Action Party), also called for a criminal investigation into those officials involved in approving the contract and constructing and inspecting the highway, including former president Óscar Arias.
