Brazilian tennis star João Fonseca has withdrawn from the upcoming Asian swing, including the Japan Open in Tokyo and the Shanghai Masters, as the 20-year-old gives his body more time to recover from an abdominal injury that has disrupted much of the second half of his season.
Fonseca announced the decision after returning to competition for Brazil in the Davis Cup against Switzerland in Rio de Janeiro last week. He defeated Dominic Stricker 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in his first match in roughly a month, helping Brazil build an early lead before the team clinched the series and a place in the 2027 Davis Cup Qualifiers.
The victory, however, did not mean Fonseca was fully recovered. He had already missed the US Open because of the abdominal problem, which first forced him out of the Cincinnati Open in August. After discussing his condition with his team, Fonseca decided that immediately traveling to Asia for another demanding stretch of tournaments was not the right move.
“2026 has been a very challenging year for me,” Fonseca said in announcing his withdrawal, explaining that repeated injuries had kept him from competing as consistently as he wanted. He said the priority now is to give more time to both his body and mind before returning to the tour.
That means Fonseca will miss the ATP 500 Japan Open, which begins September 30 in Tokyo, as well as the Masters 1000 event in Shanghai. The Tokyo tournament was expected to feature a strong field, including Carlos Alcaraz, Ben Shelton, Taylor Fritz and several other leading players. For Fonseca, the decision adds another interruption to a season that has shown both how quickly he can challenge the sport’s biggest names and how difficult the physical demands of a full ATP schedule can be for a young player.
The Brazilian reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal at Roland Garros earlier this year, defeating Novak Djokovic and Casper Ruud during a breakthrough run in Paris. He entered 2026 already with two ATP singles titles, including the 2025 Argentina Open and the ATP 500 event in Basel, where he became one of the youngest champions in the tournament’s history. His career-high ranking is No. 24.

His absence from Asia is notable in our region because Latin American men are again establishing a presence near the upper end of the ATP rankings. Argentina’s Francisco Cerúndolo, Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo, Peru’s Ignacio Buse and Fonseca are all currently inside or around the world’s Top 35, giving South American tennis several players capable of reaching the later rounds of major ATP events.
Fonseca’s next appearance has not been guaranteed, although Basel and the Paris Masters remain on his calendar. Basel begins October 26, giving him about a month to recover before attempting to defend one of the biggest titles of his young career.
The break comes at an important point in his development. Fonseca turned 20 in August and has already shown he can beat Grand Slam champions and compete deep into major tournaments. For now, though, the emphasis has shifted from climbing the rankings to making sure he is healthy enough to continue that climb.
