American Legion in Costa Rica celebrates Memorial Day

Mel Goldberg of the American Legion Post 10 laid down flags for each veteran of the organization who passed away during the last year in Costa Rica. The ceremony was held as a part of the Memorial Day celebration at the Campo de Esperanza cemetery in San Antonio de Escazú, west of San José.

During the ceremony, Commander Chuck Turner read the names of each of the deceased veterans to a crowd of around 50 attendees. The veteran’s name and service records were then passed to Chaplain John Hatcher to be burned in honor.

The ceremony was followed by a large American-style barbeque and cook-out in nearby Santa Ana in the afternoon to commemorate the U.S. holiday with friends and family of the American Legion. Around 150 people, including dozens of U.S. veterans attended the festivities.
