A Mother’s Day concert in Costa Rica like no other

A concert with the slogan – “the best gift for a mother is that her children are well” – will raise money for children whose mothers are incarcerated at Buen Pastor women’s prison, in southern San José.

All proceeds from “For Moms About to Rock,” a reference to the AC/DC song “For Those About to Rock (We Salute You),” will go to the Hogar Santa María in Aserrí, a mountain town south of San José. The home supports children of poor mothers serving time at Buen Pastor.

“The children who live in this place receive counseling, medical attention and food,” said Abel Guier, director of the School of Rock, a music school in Costa Rica.

The show will take place at the Laurence Olivier Theater in San José Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost ¢4,000 ($8) and can be purchased at Insomnia music stores or the theater box office. The venue seats 160 people.

Guier put together the charity event after the Rotary Club of San José called to ask him for help with a Mother’s Day fundraiser. (Mother’s Day is celebrated Aug. 15 in Costa Rica.) To learn more visit, the event’s facebook page.

The bands Lucho Calavera, Parque en el Espacio, Cortez Amarillo and Casco Obligatorio will play 45-minute acoustic sets at the show. The four groups will not be charging a performance fee. The fundraiser kicks off a full schedule of events for the recently founded School of Rock, an arm of Clandestina Hub Creativo. More activities will be announced shortly.

Guier also told The Tico Times that the School of Rock will be giving special bass classes on Aug. 20 taught by two well-known Costa Rican bassists.

The Bassman Sessions will be taught by Chalo Trejos and Moldo (Evolución) at 10 a.m. The classes will focus on the slap bass technique popularized by musicians like Bootsy Collins (Parliament) and Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers).

Tickets cost ¢10.000 ($20). To reserve a space, email info@clandestina.cr.
