La Reforma prison warden arrested on drunk driving charges

The head of Costa Rica’s La Reforma maximum security prison, in the northwest province of Alajuela, was arrested Monday night after he allegedly hit 12 cars while driving under the influence of alcohol in Sabanilla, in east San José. Rónald Herrera fled to his house where he was captured by authorities.

Herrera had an alcohol level six times the legal limit according to César Quirós, director of Costa Rica’s traffic police.

After hitting three cars in east San José, Herrera began to flee. He was pursued by drivers of the cars hit by Herrera. He hit several more cars while trying to escape the drivers pursuing him. Herrera also broke a guard rail before police apprehended him in his house.
