Costa Rica and Nicaragua met on the pitch Sunday night at part of Gold Cup 2019 action.

While La Sele, the Group B favorites, matched expectations with an easy 4-0 victory, the game had additional intrigue due to the two countries’s international relations.

Tens of thousands of Nicaraguans have fled the Daniel Ortega regime and sought asylum in neighboring Costa Rica. Many of them arrived at the National Stadium on Sunday to support their team.
