Drunk driver nosedives car into Paquera ferry

Hopefully your trip to the beach Thursday went better than this guy’s.

Thursday afternoon, ferry service between Puntarenas and Paquera was interrupted after a white Hyundai Santa Fe crashed hood-first into the deck of the Tabor III ferry.

The driver tried to exit the ship as it docked in Paquera, on the Nicoya Peninsula, before the boat’s garage gate fully lowered, according to a statement from the company addressed to Channel 7.

The news channel reported that the driver of the vehicle, identified as Sandí Vásquez, was intoxicated when the accident happened. Naviera Tambor S.A., the company that operates the ferry service, said it was not responsible for the mishap on account of Sandí’s inebriation.

There were 45 people seriously injured and 11 killed in traffic accidents during Holy Week as of Friday morning, reported the Costa Rican Red Cross.
