Ometepe Island: A Natural World Wonder

Gaining Ground: An explosion of online support has driven OmetepeIsland up in the world ranking in a contest to determine the “New 7 Wonders of Nature.” Though Ometepe ranked 251 of 280 nominated sites last April, the twin-peaked volcanic island that juts up from Central America’s largest lake breached the top 100 in recent weeks thanks to an influx of voting by Nicaraguans and other Ometepe fans.-Considered the largest island in a freshwater lake, Ometepe has emerged as a world-class eco-tourism destination in recent years. Nicaragua’s Environment and Natural Resources Ministry has proposed that UNESCO consider the island as a biosphere reserve.
