Thousands of Fish Die in Northern Zone River

A putrid smell oozing from theCabeza de León River and the irrigationstreams of La Argentina rice farm inUpala, in the province of Alajuela, ledarea residents to come across the largestfish kill in the country in the past fiveyears, according to the daily La Nación.After watching as thousands of deadfish and eel floated downstream andpacked into dams, residents contactedauthorities, which have opened an investigationto find the source of the problem,the daily reported.Residents informed the daily that lastweek, a helicopter fumigated the ricefields and may have polluted the river andstreams, from which fish and water sampleswere extracted for the investigation.
