Gunmen Shoot Up Honduran Newspaper Office

TEGUCIGALPA (AFP) – A car full ofpeople dressed in military fatigues conducteda drive-by shooting of the central officeof the Honduran daily La Tribuna on Fridaynight, according to a front-page publicationin the paper’s Saturday edition.No one was injured in the attack, andthe office, located in the southwest neighborhoodof Santa Bárbara, reportedly wasnot seriously damaged.Reporters from La Tribuna said theshooters opened fire with automatic pistolsshortly after 7 p.m. Friday night.Earlier that day, there had been a militaryprocession in downtown Tegucigalpato celebrate the promotion of threeHonduran colonels to the rank of general.A Tribuna reporter, who asked not tobe identified, said that the newsroom hadreceived several telephone threats in therecent past, following a series of investigativearticles on organized drug ringsoperating from the inside of the NationalPenitentiary, Honduras’ main prison.
