Costa Rica defeats Northern Ireland 3-0

Costa Rica’s last home friendly before the World Cup had a happy ending: La Sele defeated Northern Ireland 3-0 at the National Stadium in San José.

Two headers bookended the day’s scoring. Johan Venegas gave La Sele a first-half lead with a header in the 30th minute, and Francisco Calvo scored the third goal with a header off a corner kick in the 66th minute. Joel Campbell opened the second half with a goal at 46 minutes, making him the highest scorer in the new National Stadium, surpassing the previous record held by Alvaro Saborio.

La Sele now hits the road: the team will take on England Thursday night at Elland Road in Leeds, then Belgium in Brussels on June 11. The team will travel from Brussels to Russia to prepare for the World Cup.
