Shakira Enjoying a Low-Key Vacation in Costa Rica

Pop superstar Shakira is currently taking a much-deserved break from her music career and enjoying a low-key vacation in Costa Rica. On Monday night, the Colombian singer was spotted at a hotel in Escazú, a suburb of San José. Sussy Solano, a woman who was dining at the hotel with her family, said that Shakira was very kind and posed for a picture with her daughter. Costa Rican journalist Glenda Umaña also posted a video on her Instagram mentioning that she saw Shakira at the hotel. It is unclear how long Shakira will be staying in Costa Rica, but the country is a popular destination for celebrities, thanks to its beautiful beaches, lush rainforests, and friendly people.

Illegal Shark Fin Seizure Highlights Global Concerns and Costa Rica’s Role

In a major operation, Brazilian authorities have seized an estimated 29 tons of illegal shark fins, potentially marking the largest seizure of its kind to date. Ibama, the Brazilian environmental protection agency, estimates that approximately 10,000 shortfin mako and blue sharks were killed to obtain these fins, highly sought after as a delicacy in Asian markets. The confiscation of these fins sheds light on the illicit shark fin trade, its detrimental impact on shark populations worldwide, and its connections to countries like Costa Rica.

The Brazilian authorities are currently investigating two export companies located in the southern and southeastern states of Brazil, for their involvement in this illegal trade. The demand for shark fin soup, particularly in China and Japan, has fueled the illegal trade, with the market price for shark fins reaching up to $1,000 per kilogram.

Fortunately, efforts to protect shark species gained momentum in November, when 183 countries, including Costa Rica, collectively agreed to safeguard 54 shark species under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. Costa Rica’s involvement in this international initiative demonstrates its commitment to marine conservation and sustainable practices.

The recent seizure of illegal shark fins serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced in combatting the illicit shark fin trade. It emphasizes the need for continued international cooperation, stricter regulations, and greater awareness to protect sharks and their vital role in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems.
