One-room schools receive computer donations

The Education Ministry (MEP) on Thursday began delivering19,000 personal computers for single-teacher elementary and high schools in rural areas across the country, with an investment of more than ₡8.2 billion ($16 million).

The first stage of the program includes the delivery of computers in 64 one-room high schools and 282 one-room elementary schools. The computers will be loaned to students during 200 days of the school year for unlimited use at school and at home.

The program is part of the “Digital Social Agreement” initiative launched eight months ago by the Omar Dengo Foundation, a nonprofit organization. “You cannot stay behind, and we do not want you to stay behind,” President Laura Chinchilla said at a ceremony at the foundation. Education Minister Leonardo Garnier also attended.
