President Chinchilla opens ICANN meeting

During the welcoming ceremony for the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers’ (ICANN) 43rd public meeting, held this year in San José, President Laura Chinchilla told the audience “the Internet should not be viewed as a threat, but as hope, a world of hope.”

“In our philosophy, we are global. In our outlook, in our thought processes, in our daily life, … in public meetings like this, and in our operations, we are global,” Chinchilla said Monday.

Although the weeklong conference began on Saturday, Chinchilla attended official opening ceremonies of an activity that brings together 1,700 people from around the world to discuss topics such as ethics and governance of the network of networks.

Rod Beckstrom, president and CEO of ICANN, said the presence of Chinchilla at ICANN demonstrates the organization’s ongoing commitment to “internationalization.”
