General Cañas Highway to reopen Tuesday at 5 a.m.

Outbound traffic lanes shut down last week due to a large sinkhole on the General Cañas Highway, which connects San José with the province of Alajuela, were temporarily reopened Monday from 8:45 a.m. to 10 a.m., and will open again from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Over the weekend, workers installed two Bailey bridges over the sinkhole, and traffic is expected to return to normal when the bridges are officially opened Tuesday at 5 a.m., according to José Luis Salas, executive director of the National Roadway Council.

Luis Vega, director of operations at the Traffic Police, said workers will finish installing the second bridge Monday afternoon.

A giant sinkhole appeared last Tuesday on the highway, resulting in chaos for commuters and hours of delays. Local businesses were also affected, and many airline passengers missed flights out of the country.
