Preventive alert declared for Costa Rica’s coastal areas

The National Emergency Commission (CNE) declared a green alert (preventive) for all coastal areas after the arrival of a low pressure system on Wednesday increased rains and tides.

Large waves flooded and damaged at least 10 homes in Caldera, in the province of Puntarenas. As a result, 35 people had to be moved to a shelter, however, an unspecified number of people refused to leave their homes.

The conditions are expected to remain through the weekend, prompting CNE’s authorities to call for people living in coastal areas and crews of small boats to take preventive measures.

A forecast by the National Meteorological Institute stated Thursday that heavy showers are also expected in the Caribbean province of Limón and in the Northern Zone in coming days.
