Trade agreement allows Nicaraguan meat exports in Panama

In August, Nicaragua will begin exporting meat products to Panama under a free trade agreement between the two countries, Nicaraguan Agriculture Minister Ariel Bucardo said on Monday.

Bucardo said that during a president’s summit of the Central American Integration System (SICA), recently held in Honduras, Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega and his Panamanian counterpart, Ricardo Martinelli, asked their countries’ ministries of finance and agriculture to remove trade obstacles imposed by Panama on Nicaraguan meat exports.

According to the agreement, Nicaragua will be exempt from the auction process that Panama uses to import meat, and tariffs on meat products will be eliminated.

Bucardo said Nicaragua could begin exporting an estimated 200 tons of meat to Panama by next month.
