GUATEMALA CITY – The Central American presidents will meet August 8 in Nicaragua to discuss issues including combating drug trafficking and the decriminalization of drugs (as proposed by Guatemala last February), announced Guatemalan President Otto Pérez.
The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, will also be present to report the progress of a group created at the Summit of the Americas in April in Colombia.
Official data indicate that 87 percent of the drugs bound for the U.S. pass through Central America, specially in the “Northern Triangle” (Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras), where violent crime rates have increased.
