Costa Rica’s Association of Guide and Scouts announced it would not discriminate members based on their sexual orientation, the group told the daily La Nación. The statement came after the international organization’s U.S. branch, the Boy Scouts of America, said it would continue to exclude gay members from becoming adult volunteers.
Peggi Chávez, executive director of the Costa Rican scouts, said that each country has its own policies and in Costa Rica members can join regardless of their sexual orientation.
On Monday, Bob Mazzuca, chief scout executive of Boy Scouts of America, declared that the policy of not forbidding gay membership is supported by many families involved in the organization.
