Strong waves expected on Costa Rica’s Pacific shores

The National Emergency Commission (CNE) on Tuesday issued a preventive alert to people on the Pacific coast due to rising tides. The warning is in effect from today and until next Thursday.

Issued by the University of Costa Rica’s Ocean Sciences and Limnology Research Center (CIMAR), the report said that a combination of several events could increase and generate tides and coastal flooding, which would impact South Pacific areas such as Barrio El Carmen and El Cocal in Puntarenas, along with Boca Vieja and Cocal in Quepos.

CIMAR’s Oceanographer Omar Lizano said the tides will be higher than those experienced in August and July, although the size of waves will not be significantly affected.

CNE officials called on locals and vacationers to be alert, and also recommended that small boats owners monitor estuaries and rivers.
