Gas prices, bus fare and electricity rates all likely going up in October

The Public Services Regulatory Authority (ARESEP) is pondering nine public-service rate hikes for this month.

The National Oil Refinery requested a hike of â‚¡30 ($ 0.06) in the per-liter price of super and plus gasoline, due to the variation of prices in the international market.

The Costa Rican Electricity Institute asked for a 14 percent increase in electricity rates, which would mean an extra ₡2,100 ($4.20) for a family’s average monthly consumption.

Five bus routes also are asking for fare hikes, including those traveling between San José and Peñas Blancas (the border with Nicaragua), three from the Northern Zone and one from the eastern province of Cartago.

People interested in attending the hearings to oppose increases can call ARESEP for schedules at: 8000-273737.
