32 percent of Liberation members support San José mayor for president

Johnny Araya appears to have a foothold on registered National Liberation Party (PLN) voters. A Gallup poll, conducted in conjunction with crhoy.com, took place Sept. 21-30 and evaluated public support of four presidential primary candidates: Johnny Araya, José María Figueres, Rodrigo Arias and Fernando Berrocal. The poll shows the mayor of San José would receive 32 percent of registered party votes if the PLN primary were held today.

The poll also revealed favorable support for Araya from Liberation voters under 30. Arias polled in at 25 percent, with overwhelming support from voters over 40 who have completed at least one year of university-level education.

Former President Figueres received 20 percent support of those polled.

In comparison with a previous poll conducted last May, Arias saw a 4 percent rise in support for his candidacy among Liberation supporters, while Figueres saw a 3 percent drop. Araya maintained 32 percent support of PLN voters.

In other polls, Araya received a total of 61 percent approval, with only 28 percent of voters opining negatively of the mayor’s candidacy.
