Lawyers for defendant in Facundo Cabral case will file a human rights complaint

Two of the Guatemalan lawyers representing Costa Rican defendant Alejandro Jiménez, accused of plotting the murder of an alleged associate that ended up killing Argentine singer Facundo Cabral, arrived in Costa Rica on Monday to announce they will file a complaint before the San José-based Inter-American Court of Human Rights. The lawyers claim Jiménez’s right to access medical care is being violated in a Guatemalan prison.

The lawyers also said they will meet with Costa Rican authorities to discuss pending charges against Jiménez, aka “El Palidejo” here. Among the topics likely to be discussed is the testimony of Joseph Benedict Cerón, a witness for Guatemalan prosecutors who testified that El Palidejo ordered the hit on businessman Henry Fariñas over an alleged drug debt.

Cabral, 74, was on his way to the main international airport in Guatemala when carloads of gunmen attacked his vehicle in July 2011. The intended target was Fariñas, who was driving the vehicle.
