Four temblors shake Nicoya Thursday morning

Four temblors that exceeded three degrees of magnitude were registered between 7:38 and 7:54 a.m. Thursday on the Nicoya Peninsula, in the northwestern province of Guanacaste, the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) reported.

The first occurred at 7:38 a.m., with a magnitude of 3.5. The second, at 7:52 a.m., had a magnitude of 3.9; a third, the strongest, registered magnitude-4.3 at 7:53 a.m.; and the last one was felt one minute later with a magnitude of 3.

OVSICORI seismologist Marino Protti confirmed to local news Telenoticias that the quakes are aftershocks of the magnitude-7.6 earthquake that occurred in the same region on Sept. 5.

He also said that the aftershocks of an earthquake as strong as the one that shook Nicoya “can go on even for years, due to the weakening of the fault during the event.”

No damage were reported at the time.
