Public Works and Transport Ministry dismisses hike in vehicle inspection rates

The Public Works and Transport Ministry (MOPT) dismissed Thursday afternoon the possibility of an increase in the rates of mandatory vehicle inspections requested by the Spanish-Costa Rican company Riteve.

MOPT Vice Minister Rodrigo Rivera said the Public Services Regulatory Authority does not have a method for calculating rates that allows them to address Riteve’s request.

He also said that MOPT’s experts are conducting technical studies to determine the relevance of the current methodology of calculation. “To set a definitive calculation formula the method also has to be submitted to public consultation, in order to obtain feedback from users,” Rivera added.

Riteve had requested a review of the rates, which they say have not been updated for the past eight years.

If the request had prospered, the cost of vehicle inspections would have gone up by 157 percent in 2013.
