Supreme Court appoints new Judicial Investigation Police director

Costa Rica’s Supreme Court on Monday appointed Francisco Segura as the new director of the Judicial Investigation Police (OIJ). Prior to his appointment, Segura was the agency’s assistant director.

Justices elected Segura with 15 votes, while Public Security Vice Minister Celso Gamboa received six votes. Justice Rodrigo Vásquez received one vote, and Osvaldo Henderson received none.

The voting was held in a public act Monday at the court in downtown San José. The four candidates were chosen by a nominating committee after a total of 17 had applied for the post.

The position was left vacant when former Director Jorge Rojas retired on July 1, after a 38-year career, seven of them as the head of the OIJ.
