Bill on benefits for same-sex couples could be discussed Thursday

Costa Rica’s Legislative Assembly could discuss on Thursday a bill to extend economic benefits to same-sex couples.

Lawmakers in the Human Rights Commission voted against the bill, called “Coexistence Partnerships Law,” or Bill 17,668, last June. But some lawmakers, such as Carmen Muñoz from the Citizen Action Party, hope her colleagues will “give the bill a second chance.”

Lawmakers could discuss the bill in a first-round debate during Thursday’s session.

Muñoz said that if she cannot generate enough interest, she will file a motion to postpone discussion.

Backers of the bill say it “is a human rights issue,” according to Geovanny Delgado, from the Diversity Movement.

Another bill on same-sex partnerships (Bill 18,481) exists, but is in last place on the agenda sent by the executive branch.
