Costa Rica lawmaker asks U.S. President Obama not to attack Syria

José Roberto Rodríguez, a lawmaker with the opposition Social Christian Unity Party, sent a letter to U.S. President Barack Obama asking him to avoid an armed intervention in Syria.

Rodríguez sent the letter through the U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica, asking Obama to consider a peace proposal sent last year to the General Secretariat of the United Nations in New York.

At the time the legislator proposed “an immediate cease of all armed conflicts in Syria and the launch of negotiations with prominent figures of the Syrian people, mainly academics.”

The letter sent this week is accompanied by a letter from President Laura Chinchilla showing her support for the lawmaker’s proposal.

Obama’s plans to launch a military intervention in Syria came after an estimated 1,429 Syrians were killed by a chemical weapons attack, likely sarin gas.

The U.S. president already has obtained the approval of a Senate committee.
