Mario Saenz takes top Tarpon Award

Consistent fishing over both legs of the Club Amateur de Pesca won Mario Saenz the National Championship in this year’s annual tarpon tournament.

Saenz finished one fish behind Cynthia Brown in the first part of the tournament, with seven releases to Brown’s eight. He finished second in part two again, one fish behind Moises Emiliani, who released nine fish.

Saenz’s 15 total fish moved him ahead of Brown, who landed six fish in part two to give her a 14 fish total – a second place finish. Domingo Dominquez rounded out the field with a tournament total of nine releases. He took third place.

Club President Alberto Laurenchic was pleased with the turnout and the fishing. “Most of the fishing was done between Tortuguero and Barra Colorado during Part I of the tournament, and the fish were [biting] really well on the last day of the tournament. During Part II, most of the fishing was done at Barra del Colorado, but the shrimp were running close to shore, so it was more difficult to get the fish to eat.”

Laurenchic went on to say the club is headquartered in San José, 25 meters west of Princesa Marina restaurant in Sabana Oeste. They meet every Monday at 7:30 p.m. and have tournaments almost monthly. More information can been found on the web at http://www.clubamateurpescacr.com or by calling Grace Mora on weekday mornings at 2232-3430.

The next tournament will be held Nov. 10, and will be a bottom fishing tournament with boundaries between Quepos and Cabo Blanco. Contact the club for more information.
