The creators of the International Design Festival’s (FID), Alfredo Enciso and Paco Cervilla, have announced nine of the designers participating in the 2016’s FID edition. This sixth edition of the popular festival will take place March 10-12 2016 at the Antigua Aduana in San José.
The festival is co-produced by the Contemporary Art and Design Museum (MADC), and will offer a series of conferences, workshops, exhibitions and various activities all over the city. The nine designers announced for this sixth edition include projects within the areas of cinematography, publicity, graphic design and architecture. The 2015 FID edition had 2100 participants, including 560 international guests from 14 different countries.
The nine guests announced Dec. 3 for this upcoming FID are the following:
- 51-1 Architecture
One of the most important architecture studios in Peru, 51-1 was created by architects César Becerra, Fernando Puente Arnao and Manuel de Rivero. 51-1 has worked with restaurants Maido, Cosme, Astrid & Gastón, Casa Moreyra, NM Lima Hotels and Gran Cóndor Quito in Ecuador.
- Hugo Veiga & Diego Machado
These Brazilian publicity designers are the creators of the Dove Real Beauty Sketches advertising campaign. They have won more than 250 international prizes, including the Cannes Lions. They are currently directing the AKQA São Paulo office.
- Diego Vargas
A Costa Rican designer and audiovisual artist, Vargas has exhibited his work in international galleries such as 4C Saatchi & Saatchi (London), Art Moscow (Moscow), La Erre (Guatemala) and Art Consult (Panama). He has created music videos for Zoé, Disco Ruido, Love La Femme, and Reyno. Vargas was nominated for a Latin Grammy Award and MTV Music Award for best video of the year.
- Alex Trochut:
A Spanish graphic designer and typographic artist, Trochut has worked with companies such as Nike, Absolut, Adidas, The Rolling Stones, Katy Perry, BBC, Coca Cola, The Guardian, The New York Times and MTV. He has received various awards from the Art Directors Club, Type Directors Club and Creative Review.
- Carl Sprague:
This U.S. art director has worked within the art direction department for more than 30 movies. He has been nominated 29 times for an Academy Award, and won for the movie “12 Years a Slave.” Sprague has worked with Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and David Fincher. He also worked with Wes Anderson on three films: “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “Moonrise Kingdom” and “The Royal Tenenbaums.”
- Freddy Mamani
Bolivarian architect Mamani is known for his work in the new Andean style. He has created more than 60 projects in the Bolivian city of El Alto.
- Sissel Tolaas
Tolaas is Norwegian artist who works with scents. She studied mathematics, science, linguistics and visual arts and speaks nine different languages; her work focuses on the relationship between scent and communication. She has worked with BBC Imagineering, Sony Computer Science Lab, IFF New York, MARS, ZH Suisse, Cartier, Louis Vuitton, Este Lauder Paris, and the Rockefeller Foundation. Tolaas has won various awards such as the Rouse Foundation Harvard Award, Ars Electronica Award, and Synthetic Aesthetic Award.
- Elke Koenig
This German graphic designer is one of the leaders in his field. Koenig has worked with companies such as Nike, Universal Music, Volkswagen and The New York Times.
- BIG Architects
This renowned Danish architecture firm, The Bjarke Ingels Group, or BIG, works with sustainable design and social ideas. In 2011, The Wall Street Journal named this company Innovator of the Year.
