Dominican star Juan Luis Guerra returns to Costa Rica

Juan Luis Guerra will perform in Costa Rica Nov. 16 as part of his world tour and Café Volio’s 75th anniversary. The concert will be held at the National Stadium, in western San José’s La Sabana Park, at 7 p.m.

The famed Dominican singer, songwriter and producer is coming to Costa Rica to promote his new live album, “A Son de Guerra Tour.” The live CD/DVD compilation features Guerra, his band 4:40, and duets with superstars Romeo Santos (“Frio Frio”) and Juanes (“La Calle”). The Latin album boasts a mix of recent songs and classic hits including “La bilirrubina and “Ojalá que llueva café(I Hope It Rains Coffee). The new album has been well received by fans.

“Hello Costa Rica. I’m Juan Luis Guerra and I want to invite you all to celebrate together the 75th anniversary of Café Volio. … I hope to see you all there!” says Guerra in a video message.

If you’ve never heard of Guerra, you’ve most likely heard his music unknowingly because he has been producing international hits since the 1980s. “Ojalá que llueva café was his first album to reach the Billboard charts in 1989. Since then, he has had more than 30 songs take top-30 spots on the charts, and many of them have made the top 5. Guerra’s new album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Latin charts and has since remained on the charts for 20 weeks. The artist himself holds the No. 8 spot for “Artists with the most No. 1 hits” on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart.

Tickets for Guerra’s fourth concert in Costa Rica went on sale Sept. 23. The Costa Rican daily La Nación reported that tickets were “selling like hotcakes,” as 3,000 tickets were sold in the first two days. About 30,000 people are expected to attend the concert.

Those who bring an empty 500-gram bag of Volio coffee will receive 50 percent off on tickets at the door. The price ranges from ₡16,000 -₡120,000 ($32-$240). With the Volio discount, that’s ₡8,000-₡60,000 ($16-$120). The cost of a 500-gram bag of Volio coffee is about ₡2,500 ($5).

Tickets can be purchased online at publitickets.com, as well as at Play stores in Escazú, Zapote and Paseo de las Flores, and at Importadora Monge stores in Alajuela, Multiplaza Curridabat, and Avenida Central. For more information, visit the website or call 2582-2323.
